SeedWorks was established in 1998 by Dr. Balaji Nukal a well-known veteran in seed industry and Wand Partners, an US based PE fund. Dr Balaji Nukal is a PhD in Genetics and Plant breeding from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA. He started his career as a plant breeder in ICI & served as Managing Director at Sun Seeds before his association with SeedWorks and has built a company focused on creating ‘prolific, commercially successful breeding programs’. The company started with vegetables seeds and achieved market leadership in okra and tomato crops . SeedWorks entered field crops business with the introduction of hybrid rice seeds in 2006 and entered hybrid cotton seeds in 2011. SeedWorks grew the vegetable seed business over the years and became India’s largest domestic vegetable seed company. In June 2015 Bayer acquired SeedWorks vegetables seed business.
Field Crops business of SeedWorks was taken over by truenorth in July 2016. SeedWorks is well poised and placed to grow rice and cotton seeds business aggressively by increasing footprints market reach with product strengths in hand, also entering strongly into vegetable seed business from 2017.
